My Wallet is a Math Set

by Erin on July 25th, 2007

I’m sure every kid was like me — once school started, you’d lose your protractor (who needs a protractor anyway?), that needle thing, the mini sharpener and on and on until you only had the case and the ruler left.

You need a math set every year in grade school, and I always had to make mom buy a new one every September. By the time you graduated high school, there were seven of these silly, useless boxes in the craft drawer.

Then my wallet broke. Being completely poor (and totally unstylish!) I threw all my cards into one of those old Oxford math sets and haven’t looked back.

It fits my cheque book, some cash, every card I own and a pen.
It’s perfect, it’s quirky and it’s stylish. The best part is whenever I leave it anywhere, no one checks inside and I can say “I left my math set in the movie theatre.” People just think I’m weird and really, really like math, as opposed to being so completely careless.

Plus, a math set is memorable. A slick black wallet is not.

I had a friend who turned a curtain into a really hip one-shoulder tank without any sewing required. My old Spider-Man lunch box is now my make-up box.

You don’t have to give up those childhood indulgences (or necessities!). With a little imagination, they can make a hip eco-fashion statement!
